Natasha Asghar MS has joined the Macmillan Cancer Support in Wales team at the Senedd to mark the charity’s annual coffee morning fundraising event.
The event also provided the opportunity to find out more about how the coronavirus pandemic continues to impact on people living with cancer, as well as worrying new research from the charity on the gap in Wales’ specialist cancer nursing workforce.
Macmillan’s annual Coffee Morning usually sees millions of pounds donated to help support people affected by cancer.
The money raised helps fund Macmillan services to make sure people with cancer can get the physical, emotional and financial support they need.
Like so many charities, Macmillan has seen a huge fall in its fundraising income as a direct result of the ongoing impact of Covid-19.
The charity’s flagship Coffee Morning – which is one of the UK’s longest-running fundraising events – is faced with a staggering 71% income drop for the second year running (£20m).
Speaking about their support for the annual fundraising event, Natasha Asghar said:
“Macmillan, alongside our NHS and other partners, works tirelessly to do whatever it takes for people with cancer. They are doing so at a time when the disruption caused by Covid-19 means demand for the charity’s services is high, while its income is down.
“I’m very proud to help support Macmillan’s coffee morning, and to help let people know that this important fundraising event is still going ahead. I would encourage anyone to get involved, and to organise or contribute to a local coffee morning in the way that suits them best.”
Richard Pugh, Head of Services for Macmillan Cancer Support in Wales, said: “We would like to offer Natasha Asghar a heartfelt thanks for their support.
“More than 98% of Macmillan’s funding comes directly from donations, and thousands of people could miss out on vital care from our famous nurses without the public's continued support for our Coffee Morning fundraiser.
“It’s no exaggeration to say Macmillan and people with cancer have never needed the public’s help more than we do right now. There is no single or right way to hold a coffee morning – it can be whatever you make it, and it can be held when suits you best. We really hope people will pull out all the stops to do just that.”
Macmillan’s Coffee Morning this year falls on 24 September but local events can be held throughout the year.

Asghar yn mwynhau paned i gefnogi Bore Coffi Macmillan
Mae Natasha Asghar AS wedi ymuno â thîm Cymorth Canser Macmillan yng Nghymru yn y Senedd i nodi digwyddiad codi arian blynyddol yr elusen o gynnal boreau coffi.
Roedd y digwyddiad yn gyfle hefyd i ddysgu mwy am y ffordd y mae'r pandemig coronafeirws yn parhau i effeithio ar bobl sy'n byw gyda chanser, ac am y gofid ynghylch ymchwil newydd yr elusen ar y bwlch yn y gweithlu nyrsio canser arbenigol yng Nghymru.
Fel arfer, mae Bore Coffi blynyddol Macmillan yn casglu miliynau o bunnoedd tuag at helpu pobl sy'n cael eu heffeithio gan ganser.
Mae'r holl elw yn helpu i ariannu gwasanaethau Macmillan er mwyn sicrhau y gall pobl â chanser yn gallu cael y cymorth corfforol, emosiynol ac ariannol sydd ei angen arnynt.
Fel cynifer o elusennau, derbyniodd Macmillan lawer llai o incwm codi arian o ganlyniad uniongyrchol i effaith barhaus Covid-19.
Mae’r Boreau Coffi enwog hyn – sy'n un o ddigwyddiadau codi arian mwyaf hirhoedlog y DU – yn wynebu gostyngiad syfrdanol o 71% mewn incwm am yr ail flwyddyn yn olynol (£20 miliwn).
Wrth siarad am eu cefnogaeth i'r digwyddiad codi arian blynyddol, dywedodd Natasha Asghar:
“Mae Macmillan, ynghyd â'n GIG a phartneriaid eraill, yn gweithio'n ddiflino i wneud popeth o fewn eu gallu dros bobl sydd â chanser. Maen nhw'n gwneud hyn ar adeg pan fo'r trafferthion yn sgil Covid-19 yn golygu bod mwy o alw am wasanaethau'r elusen, a llai o incwm yng nghoffrau’r elusen.
“Mae’n bleser mawr gen i helpu i gefnogi bore coffi Macmillan, a helpu i gyhoeddi’r neges fod y digwyddiad codi arian pwysig hwn yn dal i fynd rhagddo. Byddwn i'n annog pawb i gymryd rhan, ac i drefnu neu i gyfrannu at fore coffi lleol yn y ffordd sydd fwyaf addas iddyn nhw.”
Meddai Richard Pugh, Pennaeth Gwasanaethau Cymorth Canser Macmillan yng Nghymru: “Hoffem ni ddiolch o galon i Natasha Asghar am ei chefnogaeth.
Rydyn ni’n derbyn mwy na 98% o’n cyllid yn uniongyrchol o roddion, a gallai miloedd o bobl fethu â chael y gofal hanfodol gan ein nyrsys enwog heb gefnogaeth barhaus y cyhoedd i ymgyrchoedd codi arian y Bore Coffi.
“Mae Macmillan a phobl sydd â chanser angen cymorth y cyhoedd heddiw yn fwy nag erioed o’r blaen, nid gor-ddweud yw hyn. ’Does yna’r un ffordd gwbl gywir o gynnal bore coffi – chi sydd i benderfynu, a gallwch ei gynnal pryd bynnag mae’n gyfleus i chi. Rydyn ni'n gobeithio'n fawr y bydd pobl yn rhoi o’u gorau i wneud hynny.”
Eleni, cynhelir Bore Coffi Macmillan ar 24 Medi ond gellir cynnal digwyddiadau lleol gydol y flwyddyn.
