Pupils and staff at Maindee Primary School in Newport have been branded ‘truly inspirational’ by the area’s MS having been awarded the Peace Mala silver accreditation award.
Natasha Asghar MS joined the school community and other dignitaries for a special celebration this week to mark the achievement.
Peace Mala is an award-winning project created by Pam Evans MBE in 2001 following the 9/11 terrorist attack and the subsequent rise in racism and prejudice.
Pam, a teacher at the time, realised in the aftermath of the September 11th attacks that some of the Muslim and Asian students at her school were being bullied and decided something educational needed to be done.
Peace Mala focuses on the Golden Rule, which is to ‘treat others as you would wish them to treat you,’ and works with young people to helping to create a more responsible, caring and compassionate society.
Some of the school’s peace pal students gave a presentation and spoke about the work they have been doing before handing out Peace Mala bracelets, a symbolic double rainbow bracelet that promotes friendship, respect, and peace between people of all cultures, lifestyles, faiths, beliefs, and none.
Natasha Asghar MS met with Pam Evans MBE at the event and some of the youngsters and staff involved in the Peace Mala project at Maindee Primary School.
She said: “It was an absolutely privilege to join Maindee Primary School and Pam Evans MBE for this fantastic celebration event.
“Peace and unity is at the heart of Maindee and it is wonderful to see the work of the truly inspirational staff and pupils at the school be recognised in this way.
“The Peace Mala does incredibly important work engaging with our younger generation, and I’d strongly encourage all schools in the area to get involved.”
