Regional Member of the Senedd, Natasha Asghar, visited Coleg Gwent’s Crosskeys Campus to discuss apprenticeships and to see how the Coleg is helping to tackle the skills gap in Wales.
Crosskeys is Coleg Gwent’s largest campus and has strong links with local schools and businesses, lending itself well to both vocational and academic provision.
During the visit, Natasha spoke to staff and students about the challenges facing Further Education, how best to meet those challenges and what are the barriers stopping more young people from taking advantage of learning new skills.
Commenting, Natasha Asghar said:
“I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to Coleg Gwent in Crosskeys to learn more about what they are doing to tackle the skills gap in Wales.
From speaking with the apprentices and students it is apparent that more information about the career choices available should be better promoted in schools. For many students, going to University is not the best option and there should be better awareness of Further Education and Training provided by places like Coleg Gwent .”
“What matters most is what is best for the student.”
“Making young people aware of the career options available, as well as apprenticeship schemes from an early stage would also help to address the wide gender gap in courses with construction, engineering and tech being considered male subjects whereas hairdressing and beauty therapy predominantly female. As this gender stereotyping is outdated and has no place in modern society.”
“I would like to record my thanks to the staff and students at Crosskeys for allowing me to visit and for providing such useful insights and views which I shall definitely pursue in the Senedd.”

Natasha yn trafod prentisiaethau ar ei hymweliad â Champws Crosskeys Coleg Gwent
Bu Natasha Asghar, Aelod Rhanbarthol o’r Senedd, yn ymweld â Champws Crosskeys Coleg Gwent i drafod prentisiaethau ac i weld sut mae’r Coleg yn helpu i fynd i’r afael â’r bwlch sgiliau yng Nghymru.
Crosskeys yw campws mwyaf Coleg Gwent ac mae ganddo gysylltiadau cryf ag ysgolion a busnesau lleol, sy’n ei wneud yn addas ar gyfer darpariaeth alwedigaethol ac academaidd.
Ar yr ymweliad, bu Natasha yn siarad gyda staff a myfyrwyr am yr heriau sy’n wynebu Addysg Bellach, y ffordd orau o ymateb i’r heriau hynny a beth yw’r rhwystrau sy’n atal mwy o bobl ifanc rhag manteision ar ddysgu sgiliau newydd.
Meddai Natasha Asghar:
“Cefais amser gwych yn ymweld â Choleg Gwent yn Crosskeys i ddysgu mwy am yr hyn maen nhw’n ei wneud i fynd i’r afael â’r bwlch sgiliau yng Nghymru.
O siarad gyda phrentisiaid a myfyrwyr, mae’n amlwg bod angen i wybodaeth am y dewisiadau gyrfa posibl gael ei hyrwyddo’n well mewn ysgolion. I lawer o fyfyrwyr, nid mynd i’r Brifysgol yw’r opsiwn gorau a dylid bod gwell ymwybyddiaeth o’r Addysg Bellach a’r Hyfforddiant a ddarperir gan leoedd fel Coleg Gwent.
“Y peth pwysicaf yw beth sydd orau i’r myfyrwyr.”
“Byddai sicrhau bod pobl ifanc yn ymwybodol o’r opsiynau gyrfa sydd ar gael, ynghyd â chynlluniau prentisiaeth, yn gynnar yn y broses o ddewis opsiynau hefyd yn helpu i fynd i’r afael â’r bwlch eang rhwng y rhywiau mewn cyrsiau, gydag adeiladu, peirianneg a thechnoleg yn cael eu hystyried yn bynciau i fechgyn a thrin gwallt a therapi harddwch yn cael eu hystyried yn rhai merched yn bennaf. Mae stereoteipio fel hyn yn hen ffasiwn a does dim lle iddo mewn cymdeithas fodern.”
“Hoffwn ddiolch i staff a myfyrwyr Crosskeys am adael i mi ymweld a rhoi cymaint o wybodaeth a safbwyntiau defnyddiol i mi a byddaf yn sicr yn codi’r rhain yn y Senedd.”
