Sporty pupils at Maindee Primary School in Newport have benefitted from a generous donation of football equipment from their local MS.
Natasha Asghar, who represents South Wales East, presented a group of students with the football bundle – which was kindly provided by McDonalds – during a visit to the school this week.
The package of goodies – which included bibs, footballs, hurdles, and a training ladder – will be used by the youngsters during their PE lessons and clubs.
Physical education is a key area for Maindee Primary School, as Year 6 teacher Mr Baksh and headteacher Mrs Cueto explained to Natasha.
Mr Baksh – who attended Maindee as a pupil – explained some of the initiatives the school has introduced to encourage more youngsters to get involved in sport including Ramadan Football and creating a dedicated girl’s football team.
Ramadan Football saw the school open late so Muslim pupils could still take part in the activities once they had prayed and eaten.
Natasha also found out about the Maindee Mile scheme, which sees pupils run, jog, or walk every day in a bid to boost their physical health.
The South Wales East politician also found out more about the school’s ‘Pay As You Feel’ shop which aims to reduce waste and support the community.
Commenting after the visit, Natasha Asghar MS said:
“It was an absolute pleasure to visit Maindee Primary School to handover lots of new pieces of football equipment and find out how it will benefit the pupils.
“We all know physical activity has many major benefits, so it is fantastic to see Maindee putting so much emphasis on it, and it was clear from my visit just how much the pupils love it.
“I was delighted to be able to play my small part by donating this equipment to Maindee Primary School and I must say a huge thank you to McDonalds for making the kit available.
“Maindee is a truly remarkable school, and I am looking forward to working with them going forward.”
